How we rank Ohio businesses

Every “Best X in Y” page is generated from a weighted score. The weights are published below, the inputs are recorded in a weekly ranking snapshot, and sponsorship is never one of the inputs.

The seven factors

  1. Review quality

Average rating, weighted to discount tiny samples and suspicious rating spikes.

    24%
  2. Review volume

How many reviews exist relative to others in the same category and market size.

    16%
  3. Review recency

How recently real customers have left feedback. Stale praise counts for less.

    14%
  4. Profile completeness

Hours, services, photos, contact details, socials and description all present.

    12%
  5. Local relevance

How strongly the business actually serves the location on the page.

    14%
  6. Verified data freshness

When we last verified the business details against a trusted source.

    10%
  7. Editorial review

A human pass for consistency, licensing signals, and obvious red flags.

    10%

What happens each week

  1. 1. Ingestion. New and updated business records arrive through a compliant Google Places import process. Visitor page views never trigger Places requests or scraping.
  2. 2. Dedupe & review. Likely duplicates are queued for a human decision before they can appear.
  3. 3. Enrichment. Missing websites and social profiles get suggested with a confidence score and require manual approval.
  4. 4. Ranking snapshot. Factors are recomputed and stored so a rank change can always be explained after the fact.
  5. 5. Page refresh. Every affected “Best X in Y” page is regenerated, its last-updated date advances, and the sitemap is rebuilt.
